![]() All Hallow's Eve"Hmmm? I'm sorry, Trix, what did you say?" Honey Wheeler asked from her desk, looking up from her History notes, after a long drawn out moment of silence. "I said, let's have a party." Honey nodded. "Okay - why?" "I don't know. I just want an excuse to have some fun." Trixie's blonde curls bounced as she swung up to a sitting position. "I know! Halloween is next week - let's have a costume party!" "I like that idea," Honey agreed, tucking her honey colored hair behind her ear. "Who are we inviting? And where are we having this party?" Trixie frowned thoughtfully. "Well, all the Bob-Whites, of course. Who else will depend on the where - we'll need to know how much space is available before we can finalize the guest list." The girls sat back and continued to discuss the possibilities for a Halloween party. Both were freshmen at SUNY Oswego, studying Criminal Justice. Their friends, all members of the Bob-Whites of the Glen, a semi-secret club they had formed in their home town of Sleepyside-on-the-Hudson, also attended SUNY Oswego. The only exception was Trixie's oldest brother, Brian. He had received his pre-med degree the previous spring and now attended the nearby Upstate Medical University. Honey and Trixie shared their dorm room with Diana Lynch, a pretty black-haired girl who was another member of the Bob-Whites. Diana was also a freshman, studying Art Education. Diana came into the dorm room in time to overhear Trixie's last comment. Tossing her backpack on her bed she turned back to the other two, and asked, "Guest list for what?" Trixie grinned at her. "Our Halloween party next week." "We need to figure out where to hold it, so we know how many people we can invite," Honey added. "Well, that's easy. We hold it at the boys' place," Di replied. 'The boys' referred to Trixie's middle brother, Mart, their friend Dan Mangan, and Honey's adopted older brother, Jim Frayne. Mart was studying Agricultural Education, and Dan was studying Criminal Justice, both were sophomores. Jim had received his Bachelor's Degree in Education the previous spring, and was now in the graduate program. The three of them shared a small house off campus. "Don't you think we should ask the boys before we plan this?" Trixie asked with a short laugh. Di shrugged, her eyes twinkling. "I guess, but you know they'll go along with anything we want." "No, Di, Mart goes along with anything you want," Honey told her. "So? Jim goes along with whatever Trixie wants." Di riposted. "And Dan will just go along." "Alright, alright!" Trixie was holding her sides to keep from splitting them as hard as she was laughing. "Can we just call them, and get down to the serious business of putting this party together?" In response, Honey picked up the phone on the desk and dialed the familiar number. The other girls could hear the phone ringing. It was picked up after three rings. Honey put the phone on a speaker. "Yo!" said a masculine voice. "Hey, Mart," Honey said. "Are Dan and Jim there by any chance?" "Daniel is present," he answered. "But your sibling is remarkable for his lack of presence at all times, except for a brief space of chronologically measured increments during the nocturnal period." Di furrowed her brow in confusion. "Huh?" "He means," Trixie translated, "that Jim is seldom home except for a few hours at night." "Oh." "However," Trixie continued, "I happen to know that Jim will be home this evening, probably in less than half an hour." She thought for a moment, then said, "Mart, we have something we want to discuss with the three of you. We're on our way over." "Are you picking up food for dinner on your way?" "Trust you to think of your stomach first," Honey said. "Don't you even want to know what we want to talk about?" Mart laughed. "I will let the distaff side of the Bob-Whites keep their small confidences for the nonce*. I have confidence you will divulge all upon your arrival. However, I repeat my question, to wit: Are you picking up food for dinner?" The three girls exchanged looks. Diana nodded to them and said, "Okay, we'll bring some food - but you guys have to cook." "What?" Mart squawked. "But ... !" Di smirked. "We buy, you fry. That's the deal." Mart groaned. "Okay, deal. We'll see you soon!" "Bye!" the girls chorused. Giggling, the girls gathered their purses and jackets and headed out. Diana watched as Trixie locked their room door and shut it, and then Honey checked it to insure it was locked. The girls stopped at the local grocery store, picking up supplies for hamburgers, fries and sodas. Trixie couldn't resist grabbing a bag of candy corn on the way to the register. Carrying their grocery bags, they headed to the boys' house. It was a small house, only two bedrooms, with a kitchen, dining area and living room. The basement had been fitted out as a rec room. Mart and Dan shared one of the bedrooms. Jim had shared the other room with Brian, until he had moved out just before the beginning of the semester. Brian's bed was still there, and he came to visit whenever he could get the time free. Mart opened the door for the girls as they walked up to the door. "Well, squaws, it's about time," he teased. "What's for dinner?" "See for yourself," Trixie told him, pushing her bag into his arms as she walked past him into the house. Honey followed her example, giving Mart her bag, and all three girls began giggling as Diana followed suit, leaving Mart struggling with three bags. Mart gave them a withering glance as he carried the bags into the kitchen. Piling the bags on the counter, Mart returned to the living room where the girls were going through the stack of cassettes, deciding which one to play. "What is on the agenda for discussion at our communal gathering this evening?" Mart asked his almost twin. Trixie tossed her head at him, making her blonde curls bounce. "You can wait until everyone is here," she said. Glancing at her watch, she continued, "Jim should be home soon. Why don't you get Dan and the two of you can start dinner?" "You're not getting involved in another mystery, are you?" Mart demanded. "Our parental units will have a conniption if you get into trouble here!" Trixie frowned and put her fists on her hips. Before she could reply, however, Diana came over to Mart, putting her arms around his waist and batting her eyes at him. "There's no mystery, Mart, and I'm getting hungry. Can't we postpone the arguments until after we've eaten?" she asked, resting her head on his shoulder. Mart put his arms around her to give her a quick hug. "Of course, my fair Diana. Your wish is my command." Leaving the girls in the living room to continue their discussion of the music, Mart walked back into the kitchen area, bellowing, "Daniel! Your presence and assistance is required in the kitchen!" Dan appeared from the bedroom, pulling his long dark hair back into a tail. He stopped when he saw the girls in the living room. "Hey! What's going on?" he asked. Honey grinned. "Trixie had an idea that we want to discuss with you guys. So we invited ourselves over for dinner." Trixie snorted. "Yeah, but we brought the food with us. You guys just have to cook it." Nodding, Dan turned and walked into the kitchen. Soon, he and Mart had the groceries taken care of and had begun frying the burgers. Trixie put the latest Queen album in the cassette player, and strains of 'Play the Game' filled the living room. Just then, Jim walked into the house. Seeing the activity, and the three extra people, he stopped short. "What's going on?" he asked nobody in particular. Trixie grinned at him. "Mr. Co-President, I would like your consent to calling a meeting of the Bob-Whites of the Glen, to take place as soon as the male members of the club have prepared dinner." Jim looked at her suspiciously. "I get the feeling you have something on your mind - something you want the rest of us to get involved in." "Aw, gee, Jim, I don't know why you'd think that," Trixie said, making no attempt at all to sound innocent, despite her words. Jim just grinned. "Fine. So what's for dinner?" he laughed. Honey waved her hand toward the kitchen. "Why don't you go help your friends in there, and you'll find out?" Before long, the group was gathered around the dining room table, enjoying thick, juicy hamburgers, chips and sodas, while talking and laughing. As Mart finished his first burger, he called everyone's attention. "Now that we are all gathered, minus our oldest sib who is diligently studying, it is time for the female members to enlighten us as to their latest hair-brained scheme." Diana gazed at him admiringly. Honey turned to Trixie, saying, "The idea was yours, Trixie, so why don't you explain it?" Her eyes sparkling with excitement, Trixie began. "I think we should have a party - a Halloween party." "A gathering to celebrate the solstice and the day to speak with the dead - and to avoid joining them on the other side," Mart said. This time, everyone turned to look at him in confusion. "That's the origin of Halloween - which is a contraction of All Hallow's Eve," Mart told them. "The ancient pagan's believed that Samhain - their name for the day - was the end of the year. And, by the way, even though it's spelled s-a-m-h-a-i-n, I am pronouncing it correctly when I say 'sah-win'. That was the day that the veil between worlds - between the world of the living and the world of the dead - was the thinnest. On that night, spirits could cross that veil. People would serve 'dumb suppers' offering food to the spirits of those who had passed on." "I don't understand," Honey said. "I thought Halloween was about doing tricks and getting treats." "Well, that is what it has evolved into," Mart explained. "The spirits would go among the houses playing tricks on the living. The living would give them the food - treats - as a way to placate the spirits." "Okay, so where do the costumes come in?" Diana asked. Mart grinned. "The spirits would try to take living souls with them, back across the veil. The living would put on horrific masks, in order to fool the spirits into thinking that they were other spirits and not the living." "What about games, like bobbing for apples?" Trixie questioned. "Well, this does take place at harvest time, so there would be plenty of apples available. The apples, and apple trees, were linked with a fertility goddess. Unmarried people would bob for apples, the first one to succeed would be the next to marry. Another ritual with apples involved single girls peeling the apples - when the peel broke off, they would let it fall into a bucket of water. The peel would then form the shape of the first initial of a boy's name - the boy that the girl would be destined to marry." "Bonfires were a big part of the celebration, too," Dan chimed in. "As a part of a cleaning or purification of the home, all fires would be extinguished, and the fireplaces and stoves would be cleaned, then laid with fresh firewood, but not lit. The community would have a big bonfire, where people would cook their feasts, and gather for celebration. The local holy man would bless the fire, to maintain its purity. The celebration would continue until midnight - not 12:00 am, but the actual middle of the night. At that point, the head of each household, usually the father or husband, would take a burning brand from the bonfire. Everyone would return home, and the hearth fires would be lit from this burning brand. This was supposed to banish evil and reinstate purity in the home for the coming year." "Wow," Trixie said. "That's quite a lot for one holiday." Mart looked smug. Jim grinned. "Not as much as Christmas," he said. "We just wanted to have a party - we need a break from school, and we thought it would be fun!" Honey wailed. "We can have a party," Dan told her. "Americans don't generally recognize all that stuff anyway. So if you want to just have some friends dress in costume and get together for some food and dancing, I'm in." "Yeah, count me in, too," Jim said. "I'm guessing that you girls wanted to talk to us about the party because you want to hold it here." Trixie bounced again. "Yes! Do you think we can?" The three men looked at each other. "I do believe something might be arranged, for suitable compensation," Mart said. "Oh, indubitably," Jim agreed. Trixie eyed them both. "What sort of compensation?" "Well, I for one would consider myself well paid by a kiss from the fair lady Di," Mart opined, quirking an eyebrow at the lady in question. "And I think I could accept a kiss from the indomitable Trixie for my payment," Jim said, grinning at the spunky blonde. "Hmmmm, does that mean I get to claim a kiss from the delectable Honey for my payment?" Dan asked. Mart snorted. "Only if you want Brian to rearrange your face!" Honey frowned. "Brian doesn't own me. If I want to kiss Dan, Brian has nothing to say about it," she stated hotly. Trixie sensed there was more behind Honey's statement than was obvious, but she didn't want to push her about it now. "Okay, how about we start planning for this party? Halloween is only a week away." Later that evening, once the girls were back in their dorm room, and ready for bed, Trixie turned to Honey to ask, "So what's going on between you and Brian?" Trixie climbed up into her top bunk bed as she waited for Honey to answer. Honey continued to fold her clothes neatly away into the bureau at the foot of their bunk, while Diana sat at her desk across the room, near her single bed. Honey turned away from Trixie. "Nothing," she said curtly. "Come on, Honey, you know you can talk to us," Di told her. Honey swung to face Di, her cheeks flushed. "I said, nothing is going on! And that's the problem!" Trixie made a face. "You know I'm here for you, Honey, and you can tell me anything, but is this going to be about you and my brother having sex?" Honey laughed at the look on her best friend's face. "Yes, Trixie, it is. I'm sorry if that's gross for you, but that's it." Trixie sighed. "Okay, gross it will be." She settled her self and put on what she thought was an expression of resigned acceptance. "Go ahead. Tell us everything." Honey held back her laughter as she thought that Trixie looked more pained than anything. Then she sighed. "I don't even know where to start - or if it's really a problem." She thought for a moment, with Di and Trixie remaining silent, allowing her time to think. "You know that Brian and I have been dating for two years now," Honey began. "Ever since Mother and Daddy decided I was old enough. And it's been really great. This last summer, we finally started doing more than just kissing." Seeing Trixie's expression slip even more, Honey laughed again. "It's okay Trixie, we didn't get past third base." "Third base!" Trixie yelped. "That's still enough of a gross factor for me! I mean, you're talking about my oldest brother!" "Yeah, well, don't worry. There's no more gross factor. Ever since the semester started, Brian and I have barely been able to talk to each other, much less see each other." Honey sighed again. "I mean, I know we talked about this. We knew this would happen. Brian is in med school now, and we knew he'd be buried in his studies. But it's still hard - I miss him, darn it!" Honey started to pace. "To top it all off, he's decided that he doesn't want to 'tie me down.' He refuses to say we're going steady or officially together in any way - says it isn't fair to me! He wants me to have the opportunity to date other boys, now that I'm in college!" "Oh, Honey," Diana sighed. "I'm sure he's just trying to be considerate of you. This has got to be hard on him too." Trixie agreed. "I know Brian has loved you practically since he first met you. I'm sure he's just being Mr. Honorable again. It must be killing him to think of you with anyone else, but he wants to be fair to you." Honey stopped pacing in front of Trixie, her hands on her hips. "How do you think this is making me feel? I don't want any other man, I only want Brian. But this makes me feel like he doesn't feel the same way about me. I'm not sure he wants me at all anymore! And I am sure that he wouldn't fight to keep me!" Trixie shook her head. "You're wrong there. He does want you. I know he does. And when he realizes what he's doing, I'm sure he'll come around and fight for you." "Hmph," Honey snorted. "I'll believe that when I see it." Trixie opened her mouth to say something more, but Honey stopped her. "Let's just go to bed. I don't want to talk about it anymore." The next week passed in a whirlwind. Diana and Mart made flyers covered with witches and broomsticks, for the Bob-Whites to hand out to their friends, inviting them to the party. Honey was busy with special requests to sew costumes for them all. Trixie and Jim made sure the house, and the rec room in particular, were scrubbed clean and decorated with fake spiderwebs, and cut outs of ghosts, witches, black cats and bats. They also got several pumpkins and carved fantastic faces in them. Dan, who had discovered a surprising ability to cook while living with Mr. Maypenny, made treats for the party: caramel apples, apple crisps, pumpkin pies and roasted pumpkin seeds. The night of the party, the BWGs got together in their costumes before their friends had been told to arrive to have a little time just for themselves, and to admire each others costumes. Trixie was dressed as Sherlock Holmes, complete with a meerschaum pipe, which she didn't light, and tweed coat. Honey dressed as Maid Marion, in a rather simple full-length gown that hugged her body suggestively. Diana was even more beautiful than normal, dressed as a fairy princess in organdy and lace that seemed to float, with shimmering sparkles gleaming over everything. Mart dressed as the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, and practiced walking, and falling, around the room as bonelessly as possible. Dan had dressed as Robin Hood, his brown leggings tight on his muscular legs and his green tunic hugging his chest and shoulders. He even had a bow slung across his back, and a quiver of arrows at his hip. Jim dressed as Superman, red cape swirling around his blue tights clad legs. Trixie looked Jim carefully up and down. "Nice legs," she said. Jim grinned as he took Trixie into his arms, wrapping the cape around them both as he bent her over in a dip, kissing her thoroughly. Dan applauded as they stood upright once more. As Dan was clapping, Honey came over to him and gave him the same look Trixie had given Jim. "Nice legs," she told him. Dan grinned as he took Honey's hand and raised it to his lips as he bowed over it. "Thank you, m'lady," he whispered huskily. Mart looked at Diana's sparkling costume and whistled. "Every time I see you, you are more gorgeous," he told her. "You look like a star from heaven that decided to visit Earth." Di blushed prettily. "Thank you, Mart. I think I like the Scarecrow the best of all." Before anything more could happen, a knock was heard at the front door. "Masks on, everyone!" Trixie cried. "Remember, no one is to unmask before midnight. Then we'll see how many people have guessed right about who's who!" Masks were donned, and Dan, whose mask covered most of his face and not just his eyes, went to take first shift at the door, admitting party goers and directing them to the basement rec room. The rec room quickly filled with chattering college students. One end of the room had been saved for dancing, and a DJ kept a constant stream of music going. The other end of the room had tables set up with treats and drinks. Outside the house, a full moon shone brightly. Groups of children in costumes ran shrieking from house to house, collecting candy and treats. An owl hooted as a lone figure walked up the sidewalk. Stepping out of the shadows, the man looked like a spectre out of time - a man from history and an echo of someone already within the house. He was dressed in tight leggings of brown, soft leather boots, and a green tunic and cap, with a bow slung across his shoulders and a quiver of arrows at his hip. A mask concealed his features. He walked up to the door, where spooky music was playing, and was admitted by his twin. Inside, the party was in full swing. Sherlock Holmes and Maid Marion came together as they circulated through the crown. "This party is exactly what I needed," Sherlock said. Marion shrugged. "It's a good party, I guess. I just wish Brian could have gotten away to be here too." The swirling crowd separated the two once more, sending Marion toward the stairs just as the archer from the past came down. She looked up at him, admiring his figure, and smiled. "Well, if it isn't Robin Hood!" she said. "Just the hero I've been looking for." Robin Hood looked at her, appreciating the way her long gown clung to her curves. "Maid Marion," he said in a husky whisper. "It is my honor, and my pleasure, to come to your rescue." Taking her hand in his, Robin Hood led Maid Marion to the dance floor. The rest of the evening, Robin Hood focused solely on Maid Marion, but rarely spoke. He danced with her. When she asked for a rest, he found her a seat and then brought her punch and snacks. "Thank you, Dan," she said when Robin Hood returned with her refreshments. Robin smiled. "I am Robin Hood," he said, his voice low. "You must forget this 'Dan' person." "Oh, come on, Dan!" Marion exclaimed. "I know it's you - I saw you earlier, remember?" The man in green shook his head, smiling. He deliberately kept his voice a husky whisper. "It is not yet midnight - not yet time to reveal our identities, Maid Marion." Marion smiled back at him. "Okay, fine, if that's the way you want to play it, I'll go along." After finishing their snacks, Robin Hood once again led Maid Marion to the dance floor. She had discovered that she felt very comfortable and happy in this man's arms. She and Dan had been friends for years, but she had never considered dating him. Brian had always been the man for her. But now, dancing in Dan's arms, she began to wonder. She felt very confused. She loved Brian, didn't she? So how could she be having so much fun in another man's arms? After a couple of dances, she saw Sherlock Holmes heading upstairs. "Begging your pardon, Robin, but I need to excuse myself for a moment," Marion said to her dance partner. Curtseying prettily as Robin kissed her hand, Marion quickly moved upstairs. Once there, she found Sherlock in the living room. "Trixie, you've got to help me!" Marion cried, grabbing Sherlock's arm. Sherlock turned in surprise. "Why, Maid Marion, whatever is wrong?" Maid Marion looked frantic. "Trixie - I mean, Sherlock - I've got a problem. I've been dancing with Dan - I mean, Robin Hood - and I really liked it!" Sherlock grinned. "So? What's the problem?" "I'm enjoying his company, enjoying dancing with him! The feel of his body against mine, the way he holds me - but what if Brian should walk in and see us?" "Brian told you he wasn't going to be able to come, didn't he?" Trixie asked. "And he told you that he thought you should spend time with other men. So, I still don't see what the problem is." "I love Brian!" Marion wailed. "I know I do! So how can I find so much enjoyment with another man?" Sherlock just grinned. "You'll just have to figure that one out yourself. Why don't you return to your Robin Hood, and wait for midnight?" Patting Marion's arm, Sherlock walked over to the door where Superman was currently on duty. Slowly, Marion walked back downstairs. A few steps up from the floor, she stopped to survey the crowd. The Scarecrow and the fairy princess were on the dance floor, as they had been all night, in the middle of a half dozen other couples. One of the Blues Brothers, complete with dark glasses and hat, was in the middle of a crowd of women near the refreshments. More couples were scattered around on the sofas and chairs. Everyone appeared to be having wonderful time. Suddenly, Robin Hood was there, holding out his hand to take hers and help her down the last few steps. Deciding to just enjoy herself, Maid Marion took his hand and smiled at him. Half an hour later, midnight was finally approaching. Superman and Sherlock Holmes had locked the front door and had joined the party. Laughter rang out frequently from people all around the party. At long last, the DJ announced that there was only one minute left - one minute in which to guess the identity of those around them before the unmasking. Marion put her arms around Robin's waist, holding him in place. "You know, it just occurred to me that you might try to run away. Well, you're not going anywhere." Robin smiled at her, and put his arms around her. "There is nowhere else I'd rather be," he whispered. Everyone began counting down, just like at a New Year's Eve party. "Five. Four. Three. Two. One!!" Suddenly, there was a flurry of movement all around as masks where removed. Honey slipped hers off quickly, then held her breath as she watched her partner remove his. When Brian's handsome features were revealed, Honey let out a shriek. "Brian Belden, how could you! How could you trick me like that, letting me think you were Dan all night long!" "Um, Honey?" a voice called out from across the room. "I'm over here!" Honey turned around to see Dan waving at her. He was Elwood, the Blues Brother. Honey's eyes narrowed. "You two planned this." Then she saw the grins on Trixie, Jim, Mart and Di's faces. Her eyes flew wide. "You all planned this!" Trixie held up her hands in surrender. "Guilty as charged. We knew how much the two of you had been missing each other. So we wanted to get you together. But since this is a costume party, complete with masks, we thought we'd play a little joke. You're not really mad, are you?" Honey continued to scrutinize the others, unsure how to answer. Brian slid his arm around her waist, hugging her close. "Please, Honey, I had to see you. Ever since I told you to date other guys, it's been killing me to think that you might actually do it. Maybe I shouldn't have gone along with their plan, but it sounded like fun - to pretend I was Dan the Man, the ladykiller, for one night, while I could still be with my best girl ... I didn't mean to hurt you." Honey looked up into his eyes, wondering how she ever could have mistaken those warm brown orbs for Dan's much darker ones. She melted into him. "I could never stay mad at you," she said. "I'm glad you're here." Everyone cheered as the DJ began playing more dance songs. Before Brian could lead Honey back onto the floor, Dan came over to them. "Um, Brian? I think we need to talk. What's this about me being a ladykiller?" Brian laughed at him. "You gonna tell me you're not?" "Well," Dan began, only to be interrupted by a gorgeous Fay Wray who wrapped herself around him. "Let's dance, Danny," she purred. Brian laughed again. "Have fun, Danny!" Brian stayed in town for the remainder of the weekend, though very little was seen of him by the other Bob-Whites. As very little was seen of Honey, too, no one wondered at that.
Once again, thank you sooooo much to my editors: Trish, Malficient and CarrieLynn! You guys make the best suggestions and I would be lost without you!
